Personality:

Demyx portrays himself as a cheerful, playful, lazy character. Because he has no actual feelings, all of these things are fake, a mask to hide his true nature. He behaves this way, because he does his best to remember how his Somebody behaved and the nature he used to have before he lost his heart. He prefers to smile and be cheerful while being surrounded by people who are far too serious for his tastes. He has distaste for the job he does, and the Organization, but he is incredibly loyal to his Superior.

Demyx is a talented musician and spends a great deal of time playing his sitar when he’s not on missions. He’s also the most relaxed of the group. He’s far more attached to his sitar than expected, it’s remarked upon that he would be upset if his sitar went missing. He uses music and chatter to annoy his co-workers. While many of the Nobodies pair up, Demyx is always seen alone, the odd man out, although that doesn’t really bother him. He would much rather move through life at the beat of his own drum. His laziness is a big part of that, because he’d rather do his own thing than accept orders.

Being a Nobody, his true nature is one of a monster. When he drops the mask, his tone is cold and calculating. His movements are ruthless and precise. He works his chosen personality to his advantage. He likes people to consider him as a wuss, a non-threatening entity, but when his hand is forced he’s adept. He likes using the surprise to his advantage. Aside from feelings being absent, he also lacks a moral compass due to the long time he’s been in the Organization and he does not always know how to behave appropriately. When discussing the loss of the fallen at Castle Oblivion, he gives the news with a big smile as though he does not realize he should demonstrate upset, or that those around him might be upset at the loss of a friend.

Demyx is also not academically inclined. He would never have taken initiative to learn anything he didn’t need to, or wasn’t interested in. While he might be musically gifted, (since his music is often of his own making, he could be considered so) it seems unlikely he would have educated himself beyond the grade at which his heart was taken. He is not terribly clever, or bright, but he is perceptive. He is the type of person that people dismiss, but he’s always listening and watching when it seems as though he is not. Reconnaissance was his specialty for a reason - because he could go out and get information through observation and fading into the background.

The single most influential event was when Demyx lost his heart. He was the first non-Radiant Garden Nobody in the Organization, the Ninth member in and he was a bit on the outs compared to the founders. He wasn’t motivated, or dedicated to the cause at the time, he was just a kid they picked up along the way. He was indoctrinated into the group, and easily influenced, due to his age and the method in which Nobodies are made. Because he was brought up in this environment, it affected his ability to retain a moral compass. Demyx does not seem inherently evil - if he wasn’t influenced, he likely wouldn’t do the things he does.

A turning point was the loss of those at Castle Oblivion. It increased his workload and he began tapping into other skills, such as theft and various missions that as a recon specialist he would not have been assigned. Ultimately he was assigned a mission that he knows he’s going to fail - the retrieval of Roxas. Though Demyx is lazy, he must be relatively successful at his missions, or he’d have been destroyed long ago. Demyx is conflicted, fighting a battle he knows he cannot win. He’s been working hard at self-preservation and when backed into a corner, he chooses loyalty over everything, which leads to his demise as a Nobody.

Demyx is mainly motivated by self-preservation and fear. The threat of his demise was a decent enough motivator to get him to maintain his sense of self and to hold onto who he was, because that was all he had. Once he was gone, there would be nothing left behind as his Superior said, and Demyx wanted to hang onto what he had for as long as he could have it. Aside from this, the promise of his heart was enough to manipulate him into the Organization, because he feels empty and lost without it. He is attached to his sitar because he believes it to be a connection to what he lost. His appearance and mannerisms are attempts to retain his humanity, and everything he does in the end, it is with the hope that there is something to come after the time he’s been a Nobody, even if it’s been a really long time.

People see Demyx as lazy, playful and cheerful, someone weak and easily overlooked. Some of these traits are true - he is lazy and he does like to play and he prefers to be cheerful, but that cheer is a facade. Demyx is not weak, he is one of the few members with underlings and statistics wise he’s in the high-middle range of the members in the Organization. Demyx did not go down without a fight. While his playful side is usually light, it’s sinister when he drops his mask.

When it comes to conflict, Demyx does his best to avoid it. He’s not naturally a fighter, however cornered with his back against the wall, he’ll go all out. He likes to make a game of it, taunting endlessly and throwing his opponent off their game. He knows what he’s doing and he has confidence he can manage when he has to. Otherwise, he plays up weakness, attempting to show he’s not suitable, even if he may in fact, be fine. He plays fearful to avoid conflict as much as he can, but that too is a front, he’s ultimately too lazy.
