History

Demyx's origins are completely shrouded in mystery. It's surmised that he is both from far away and/or likely far in the past. It's also known he holds some kind of connection to the ancient keyblade wielders, likely one of the forebearers. Of the three other members in this select group, two were keyblade wielders themselves, meaning there's a high likelihood that may have been a part of his life.

It doesn't matter. Demyx doesn't remember any of that. Whether it's due to Xehanort's influence on his heart, or just being a Nobody in general, he appears to know very little regarding his 'old life' and the mention of him being connected to a keyblade wielder was incredibly surprising.

He was adopted as a member of the original Organization XIII, as member number IX. During his time with them, he worked on various missions, the majority falling under the umbrella of reconnaissance, as that's his specialty. Demyx was careful to keep everyone at a distance and not make too many waves but this was incredibly lonely for him. At the point that half the Organization was wiped out, he met the same fate at the end of a teenager's keyblade.

It's presumed Demyx returned where he came from, recompleting like everyone else, but there was no peace to be had. Xehanort called him back in time for the True Organization's rehash. This time, Demyx was barely able to contain his total contempt for those in the Organization, and when he was ultimately rejected and replaced with a replica, he was immensely irritated. Not just irritated, but he felt trapped because the consequences for betraying Xehanort are incredibly serious and he has self-preservation.

He jumped at the chance to interfere with his plans when his safety was assured and he found a pathway out of the Organization. He did a very effective job burning that bridge. He just happens to also believe that the light is also coming for him, leaving him lost, paranoid and alone.

Since the end of his involvement, he has vanished.

Iteration

A Nobody shrouded in immense mystery - where Demyx is from, his name or even his allegiances are not entirely known.

Drawn from somewhere far away and in the past, Demyx was a member of the original Organization XIII. It's unclear what the process to make this happen is, or just how consensual his participation was, but once becoming a member he did his job flying under the radar exceptionally well.

Chosen not for his skill, or desire, but rather his connection to the ancient keyblade wielders, round two saw Demyx bitter about being jerked around and made a fool of by Xehanort. When presented an opportunity to help sink his plans, with as much protection as could be afforded, he jumped at the chance to get a little revenge.

Having very effectively burned those bridges, Demyx stands alone as potentially the lone surviving Nobody - and facing a very uncertain future.

Canon Abilities

Arpeggio

Demyx summons a weapon that's connected to his heart. It takes the form of his beloved sitar Arpeggio.

Cura

A regeneration spell that heals over time.

Dark Corridors

He can open and use unseen pathways to get around as though teleporting through portals. He can use them pretty much anywhere he's been, however the portals are particularly dangerous - even for Demyx.

Hammerspace

Demyx has an unseen storage space where he hides his sitar and anything else he wants to chuck into it. He tends to keep it pretty empty, but he does use it on occasion.

Hydrokinesis

A fancy term for Demyx's control over water, he can make walls, balls, geysers and manipulate already existing water. He has a massive amount of MP and could probably summon the amount of a small lake, between all of his moves. This is his natural, Nobody affinity. He can pull water out of other liquids because water is all he could manipulate. He primarily uses it in combat and despite downplaying it, his skills are exceptionally sharp. He has also used it to glide around on top of the lake for fun.

Limit Break/Final Limit

When pushed to the brink of death and there's nothing else to do but hope for the best, he can let out one final burst of magic, in either ball or geyser form to do massive damage over an area of effect.

Additional Abilities

Advanced Hydrokinesis

Demyx, through studying at Baba Yaga, has learned to manipulate more than just water, and in fact this now encompasses any liquid in full. He's no longer leaving the non-water ingredients behind.

Aerokinesis

He has learned at Baba Yaga how to feel the flow of air and how to manipulate it. He's intending on moving to combine his air and water manipulation together.

He's looking to expand into a much more general mage.

Role

Physical Attributes Demyx can shift into the form of an otter. In his human form, he still has an otter tail and small otter ears - but they hide in the shorn bits of his hair, close to his head. He's also got a patch of fur that trace his back from where his tail ends, the length of his spine, shaping out over his shoulders. He doesn't know it yet, but he can actually breathe under water.

Non-physical Qualities He can have an effect on the moods of others if he tries, either riling them up or calming them down. At least, when it comes to Legends and Myths. Other Familiars are immune to this. He does not have a bond at this time.

Reasoning Demyx is not a risk taker, nor is he a leader. He's notoriously a fence sitter, even moreso now that he's been a complete turncoat in the third game. He doesn't like to rock the boat, no matter how much he knows about people's plans. The reason for this is because he's rather self-serving in that he wants to stay alive. He likes to pick the winning team - not lead the revolution. He is neither a hero nor a villain really, he likes to sit in the gray zone. It's quite likely he can be influenced one way or the other, but that's a long journey.

Alastor

The dislike meter is creeping down! Demyx got off to a very wrong foot with Alastor, when the man accused him of trying to hurt Naminé, which he definitely wasn't doing. As they encounter each other in more vulnerable settings, his initial dislike is slowly ebbing away. They might be able to be friends sometime in the future.

Eustace

Demyx finds himself chatting with Eustace from time to time. He seems a bit gruff, but nothing he can't handle. The only thing they really don't see eye to eye on is that Demyx is not a dog person.

Flowey

An interesting friend who always seems to be there when he needs him, Demyx is quite fond of Flowey and his friendly nature.

Ienzo

Ienzo not only holds his heart, but more importantly his trust. Demyx will turn to him first anytime he needs something, and he genuinely feels close to him. He's explored a bit of light dating with Ienzo, and intends on continuing that trend.

Ira

Demyx finds himself occasionally asking Ira questions, while being afraid of the answers. His journey of self-discovery is rolling along and Ira seems like someone he can trust.

Isabela Madrigal

To him, Isabela feels a bit like his partner in crime - the first major friend he made in Songerein when he arrived and someone he always has a genuine smile for.

Magilou

Demyx has not managed to encounter her a single time that didn't devolve in harmless flirting. She's definitely someone he enjoys spending time with and he appreciates her performative nature, as it compliments his own.

Nahida

A young lady who was the unfortunate victim of his leafever, he thinks she's pretty neat and very gracious.

Naminé

Naminé occupies a certain space in his life in that he feels like he has to hold back who he is. She's kind, she's definitely friend shaped, but his encounter with Alastor has tainted their tentative friendship. He's constantly nervous about scaring her.

Riku

Riku understands better than most the darker side of Demyx, and he has turned to him from time to time for a little guidance. He considers them friends, even if he's not sure if Riku feels the same way. Mostly, though, they banter and Demyx likes that.

Roxas

More than Riku, Roxas understands Demyx in a way that other people just can't. They're on the same journey and Demyx is running three steps behind, but Roxas has been a balm to his concerns and has made him realize a lot of things are just not as serious as he was thinking. He truly values the opportunity to speak, and Roxas has completely tilted his world view on its axis - for the better.

Sora

Sora is of course the man of the hour and while Demyx was worried about a rocky relationship with him, that hasn't turned out to be the case. Just like he gets along with Roxas, he finds himself getting along with Sora too. Sora's just genuinely nice. He's also pushing Demyx in the same direction Roxas is, just a little gentler.

Vanitas

Coming from a place of worry, fear and dislike, Demyx adn Vanitas have come a long way. They've gone from being potential/probable enemies to being tentative friends. Demyx is no longer afraid of him, and while Vanitas does have some edge, he feels pretty confident that they at least care enough about each other to help each other out. Sounds like a friend to him.

Personality:

1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.

Demyx is a clever, sneaky guy who puts on a huge front in order to curate what people think of him. He does this primarily to subvert their expectations when he needs to pull a surprise out of nowhere. Demyx comes across as overtly friendly when engaged. He speaks in a bright tone, uses exaggerated gestures and makes friendly remarks and jokes. He wants to be liked. He's naturally an introvert, he doesn't ever get close to anyone in the Organization, in fact, despite the fact he wanted to make friends. He is not afraid to lean into his fears, nor is he afraid to play the ditzy blond. Because of his job as an information gatherer, the more he can get people to lower their guard and dismiss him, the more that they are likely to spill information and he is a master of this.

To that end however, it's incredibly difficult to get much out of him that is in fact real. When he's not trying to project this image, he's quiet, calm and calculating. When he doesn't have to impress anyone anymore he can even be quite sarcastic and witty, traits that suggest he's actually quite a deep thinker even though he expressly tells people he isn't. He is not a risk taker, nor does he even appear like one. He will let people believe he's cowardly, but he's always calculating. He gathers information and sits on it until he can use it to its greatest effect. He only accepts the invitation to be a turncoat because it was the more enticing offer and even admitted his hesitation was because of the potential repercussions. He's rightfully paranoid because perhaps more than most he understands the position in which he finds himself.

2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?

Demyx is probably driven the most by a primal desire to survive. Everything he does is calculated to fly under the radar, something the works fairly well the first time around in the Organization until the disaster of Castle Oblivion and Roxas' exit when there just aren't enough members to hide behind. His second time around he was angry at his time being wasted and his actions were, albeit cautious, driven frankly by his ire at being spurned by Xehanort and completely tossed aside. There are some factors at play in that, he's from somewhere and sometime in the past, he likely felt cornered into agreeing to participate in the first place and in the end was there to be a benchwarmer. Whatever Xehanort wanted out of him, was not clear because he doesn't seem to remember his past and it irked him to no end, hence his partnership with Ienzo and the light side.

Even with him siding with the light he doesn't actually seem to be too opinionated one way or another. He chose the side that seemed like it was going to be the most likely to win, and beyond that, assure his safety for some time. It's why he says they're 'kinda' allied. Demyx is mostly allied with Demyx. However, apparently when treated with respect he can certainly be persuaded to put some effort into it.

Outside of work matters, Demyx is an artistic soul driven by his love of music. He practices as much as he can get away with, strumming his sitar and enjoying himself. His sitar is the thing most precious to him, which is a unique trait among Nobodies. Not only is his weapon not really a weapon, but it's something that he's deeply connected to on a personal level and suits his pacifist nature.

3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?

The most negative traits that are often associated to Demyx by his peers, that he's lazy and careless are merely fronts as he is neither. When it comes to regrets, his regrets are more short-sighted, such as not being able to wiggle out from confronting Sora. He wasn't happy about that situation. He feels the same way about being reinvited to the Organization a second time. This is very likely due to the fact he doesn't remember his Somebody, nor where he's from or what he's supposed to be think.

This is actually his biggest flaw: his inability to take responsibility and see the bigger picture of how his actions have impacted everything. Not only are his memories missing but because his feelings were muted a long time he doesn't have a strong opinion on what the Organization did, or his role in it. When Vexen speaks to him of regret, he scoffs that off. He sees everything he's done as a survival tactic and nothing more when he's caused a lot of unnecessary harm to innocent people in many different worlds.

It's entirely likely that if he regained his heart and memories that he would regret his actions - but at this point in time he does not. He feels like he was stuck between a rock and a hard place and because he's so self-centered and focused on that he can't see the bigger picture.

His other flaws include a deep mistrust of everyone around him, a strong sense of paranoia and an inability to really forge bonds with people because he's so inwardly standoffish. He can also be incredibly grating at times, especially when he wants to be, and his playful personality which might fit in somewhere was not a great fit for the Organization.

4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?

I suspect if you listen to Demyx's music, he's saying a lot more than he ever would verbally. It's the best way to get a read on him - and no one's ever tried it.

Abilities & Inventory: Most of what he can do is found here in detail.

The long and short of it is that Demyx can summon and manipulate water and he uses his sitar to do the heavy lifting on higher level spells. He also has a limit break. His Final Limit is a large ball that explodes as an AOE attack.

As a Nobody he has access to darkness manipulation, primarily used for their dark corridor teleportation trick, as well as a hammerspace type pocket in which Demyx stores his sitar. Limitation: Demyx won't be able to teleport himself anywhere beyond where he can see.

He's bringing the only two items, his beloved Arpeggio and his gummiphone which obviously has no reception in this world. Weird that.

ARMADA SELECTION

Demyx is not evil, but he is rather morally ambiguous. He's not interested in the rule following of the Paladins, which makes him settle more comfortably with the Corsairs, not that he's actually one to pick sides to begin with. He's more in tune with independence and following the beat of his own drum. He's also not afraid to lie, cheat and steal as necessary. Whatever it takes to keep him safe.

Baba Yaga

Demyx does not have a set schedule for classes because he can't sit in a classroom and focus. He's not going to get anything out of having books shoved at him as opposed to just feeling the magic run through him. He's coming in with significant experience in water magic, with a tentative interest in other kinds. He wants to be more than just a fighter, but rather, he wants to be a significantly more well rounded mage/bard.

He gets maybe 2-3 hours of actual instruction a week, and much of his time is spent thinking, and feeling - which looks a lot like goofing off, but he's being quite diligent. To forge a connection to the other elements he needs to feel them as a first step.

His first focus is to push the boundaries of his water manipulation. Can he control the temperature of his water? How about the density? Can he move other liquids without leaving non-water particles behind?

Those are his first areas of study, so if he's sitting around staring at a glass of orange juice, he's working on it.

Timetable - Erratic

Demyx has mastered manipulating liquids that are not water, without leaving the non-water particles behind. He's expanded his focus both to Familiar studies, and now to air magic.

Demyx can now conjure a gust of wind and can create a nice mist.

Demyx lives in one of the tiny houses, his back window where his bed is has a view of the lake, although it's not a lakefront property. A small space if perfectly fine with him as he doesn't really have much, although he's just glad for the personal space!

All accents, cushions and bedding are shades of blues and purples.

Honestly, until Demyx figures out he can use the relic for music he's likely to forget it or not have it on him at any given time. Once he does though, he'll probably be glued to the thing. That, and he'll have it when he's keeping an eye on the network.

Dangling from the charm loop is this one, a nod to his love of the beach and a subtle hint at the hidden water motif.

Canon Abilities:

*Hammerspace: A hidden space in darkness that allows Demyx to carry things. It is currently empty, save his sitar Arpeggio.

*Arpeggio: Connected to Demyx's heart, it serves as his weapon and conduit of his magic power. While he has some low level skills without it, the bulk of what he can do requires Arpeggio to work.

*Water summoning/water manipulation: Demyx can summon water out of nowhere, he can also manipulate water into doing his bidding. His capabilities are massive due to the fact he has a very high magical potential. Accessing his hammerspace also requires him to manipulate water.

*Water clones: He can summon up to 99 of them at one time, multiple times in combat. They are the same size as him, just made out of water.

*Water balls/columns/wall: The various ways he uses water in combat, primarily to attack and defend.

*Limit Break - Wave Gigs: An escalating number of water columns are released in a wave of attacks.

*Final Limit: He creates a huge water ball that explodes when finally formed.

Role Qualities/Attributes: His primary animal will be an otter. Demyx will manifest an otter tail as well as a patch of fur the length of his spine up to his shoulder blades from the tail.
Role Reasoning: Demyx is not a risk taker, nor is he a leader. He's notoriously a fence sitter, even moreso now that he's been a complete turncoat in the third game. He doesn't like to rock the boat, no matter how much he knows about people's plans. The reason for this is because he's rather self-serving in that he wants to stay alive. He likes to pick the winning team - not lead the revolution. He is neither a hero nor a villain really, he likes to sit in the gray zone. It's quite likely he can be influenced one way or the other, but that's a long journey.

★ Personality ★

What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?

For better or worse, his most defining relationship like many in the Organization is with Xehanort himself. While Xehanort likes to delude himself into believing that his Nobody pals want to be there, this simply is not the case. Demyx had an entire other life going, likely in the distant past. He had his goals and ambitions all of which he does not remember. Aside from dragging his heart from the past to the future, being given a name based on one he can't recall, Demyx's memories have been manipulated and mostly erased. He has only the barest knowledge of his past life - and Xehanort did that. He has also implanted a part of himself in Demyx, effectively corrupting him with darkness, something he isn't sure what to do with.

He has never wanted to be in the Organization, he has no connection with the goals or beliefs and yet he remained, most likely because the choice offered was never actually a choice. He's clever enough to know this. The relationship is complex because he also wants his approval, he's dependent on Xehanort and when Xemnas casts him aside, he gets angry and spurned. He is a harbinger in his downfall. Not because he thinks he's a good person, but frankly, because he was discarded and that hurt him.

It's more impactful to note that Demyx doesn't have deep, meaningful relationships with any of the other Nobodies. This has made him jealous of them, because he's a friend-oriented person who can't seem to make a friend. To that end, he's a bit of an odd duck and a lone wolf. He's always been an eccentric kind of Nobody, but this was emphasized more with his lack of connections.

What is a headcanon (or two) you feel strongly about and that you prefer playing your character with? How is this supported in canon and why do you think it benefits the character's story?

Demyx is deceptively powerful for someone who doesn't put any effort into it, it's only Vexen, Xemnas and Zexion who can outpace him in magical potential. It was hinted at that his heart is connected to one of the Foretellers and from what we know about the two whose identities were revealed, it's incredibly likely that Demyx was once a keyblade wielder, and like his Nobody, probably a very powerful one at that. Considering the indication that all the answers will be revealed in the next game - he's also likely from Scala Ad Caelum, which makes him nearly as far back as Xehanort himself. His connection may be to Invi who is also adept at elemental magic with a focus on speed, much like Demyx himself who is not at all very physically strong.

This connection and his very deep well of magical ability suggests that a viable path forward for Demyx is likely magical. He probably has a great deal of potential to learn other elemental magic, just like Invi did. He's not academically minded though, it's the kind of thing he would have to feel his way through. His heart, which was just freshly stolen is regrown roughly 13% at this point, and he will definitely regain it, and his memories over time.

As the next Nobody in the Organization apart from the apprentices, then Axel and Saix, he's likely served a long enough term, 8 years. He was likely only 13 when he was recruited. He hadn't yet reached his potential as a keyblade wielder.

Is your character capable of forgiveness or will they hold a grudge until they die? Would anything ever make them change their mind?

Demyx had always seemed like the forgiving type, after all he brushed aside many slights and insults made to his face over the years, particularly from someone like Larxene. Minor issues never bothered him, but Xehanort's rejection brought forth an unexpected volatile reaction. He already wasn't thrilled with the man and his rejection added insult to injury. He can be very placid, like his element, but he can also be dangerous and his anger became one of the catalysts to Xehanort's eventual failure. He agreed to be recruited because he wanted that revenge, and he wanted to watch the Organization burn, and he did. Demyx was instrumental in the return of two ex-Nobodies, and the delivery of Master Ansem. To say he had a hand behind the scenes is no exaggeration. His grudge against Xehanort is deep and he will carry it with him until he dies. There's nothing that can be done to have him forgive him. He's been cursed by him in several ways and is stuck with the physical reminders of his gold eyes, the recusant's sigil (χ) and his name - not to mention his missing heart.

What is your character's safespace? When do they feel the most settled and comfortable? When do they feel confident and relaxed?

Demyx's safespace is not a place, but his sitar Arpeggio. It's a tangible connection to the heart he lost, but more importantly, it's his instrument. He's never happier than when he gets to kick back and just pour his heart out. His music is a mix of songs he knows, songs he's picked up and plays by ear, or more importantly, his own compositions. He can sit and compose music formally, or more likely, he plays a stream of consciousness. All of his emotions and thoughts are spelled out in a manner that no one seems to realize, but it's cathartic to him. His favourite place to engage in this activity is by the seaside, somewhere on a beach, comfortable relaxed and happy.
